The Extraction franchise consists of action thriller installments based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks and the Russo brothers. The franchise consists of two films, with a third film, a spin-off film, and a spin-off television series in development. The series centers on search-and-rescue missions around the globe by mercenaries portrayed by Chris Hemsworth, Don Lee, and Omar Sy.

Extraction (2020)

On March 5, 2012, it was revealed that the Russo brothers were on board to direct the film Ciudad, with Dwayne Johnson attached to star. The film's screenplay was written by Joe Russo based on the graphic novel of the same name written by the Russo brothers and Ande Parks.[1] Following years of evelopment, it was announced on August 31, 2018 that Sam Hargrave would direct the film, now titled Dhaka and starring Chris Hemsworth as the lead.[2] In November, the rest of the cast was set, including David Harbour.[3] Principal photography began in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, India in November 2018[4] and moved to Ban Pong, Thailand before wrapping in March 2019.[5] The film's working title changed from Dhaka to Out of the Fire, before the final title was revealed to be Extraction on February 19, 2020.[6] The film was released exclusively on Netflix on April 24, 2020.[7]

Extraction 2 (2023)

In May 2020, it was reported Joe Russo had been hired to write a sequel to Extraction, with the intention of both Sam Hargrave and Chris Hemsworth returning.[8][9] In December 2020, the Russo Brothers stated that beyond the sequel they hope to develop a series of films set within the world of Extraction to launch a cinematic universe. In January 2021, it was rumored that the Russo brothers were also working on an origin story for Randeep Hooda's character Saju.[10] Filming for Extraction 2 was slated to begin in Sydney, Australia in September 2021, but measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic moved production to Prague.[11] Principal photography began on December 4, 2021, in Prague, Czech Republic,[12] while further shooting began in Vienna, Austria on January 28, 2022.[13] Filming officially wrapped on April 6,[14] with additional reshoots taking place in Prague in November.[15] The film was released exclusively on Netflix on June 16, 2023.[16]

Extraction 3 (2027)

In June 2023 at that year's Netflix Tudum festival, it was announced that Extraction 3 was in development.[17] Stating that the company identifies Extraction as a franchise, the official logo was revealed.[18] Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role, with Sam Hargrave directing the film.[19] On October 8, 2025, Hargrave stated that Extraction 3 will begin filming in 2026, with an anticipated release in 2027.[20] Extraction 2 cast members Golshifteh Farahani, Olga Kurylenko, and Idris Elba are expected to return for the sequel.[20]

Tygo

In December 2025, Netflix announced Tygo, a spin-off film in the Extraction universe set in South Korea.[21] The film will be written by Cha Woo-jin and directed by Lee Sang-yong and stars actors Don Lee, Lee Jin-wook and Lalisa Manobal.[22] The story follows Lee as Tygo, a former child-soldier turned mercenary who goes on a revenge mission through Korea's criminal underworld.[23]

Television series

In February 2025, it was reported Netflix had greenlit an eight-episode series, originally titled Mercenary, set in the Extraction universe with Glen Mazzara serving as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, and Omar Sy as the lead.[24] The series will follow a mercenary in Libya who must navigate warring factions and killers in the nation in order to save a group of hostages.[24] In August 2025, it was announced that Boyd Holbrook, Natalie Dormer, Waleed Zuaiter, May Calamawy, and Ed Speleers had joined the cast.[25][26][27] In October 2025, Sacha Dhawan, Ross McCall, Pip Torrens, Sam Woolf, Michael Zananiri, Riyad Sliman, Muhannad Ben Amor, Aaron Heffernan, Jojo Macari, Theo Ogundipe, and Emma Appleton were added to the cast.[28] The Russo brothers, Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, Chris Castaldi, Sam Hargrave, Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin are executive producing.[28]

Extraction was viewed by 99 million households during its first month of release, breaking the record for the biggest premiere in Netflix's history.[33][34] Extraction 2 earned 129.3M views in its first 66 days, entering Netflix's most popular films list at number ten, right below the original film at number nine.[35] This made Extraction the first film franchise to chart two films on Netflix's most popular movies list.[36]
