Your friends and neighbors is an American dark comedy crime drama television series from Jonathan Tropper for Apple TV+, starring Jon Hamm, Amanda Peet, Olivia Munn, Mark Tallman, Hoon Lee, Lena Hall, and Aimee Carrero.^[1] The series premiered on April 11, 2025, with its first two episodes.

Premise

Coop (Hamm) is a New York hedge fund manager who is recently divorced and becomes unemployed. He uses criminal methods to maintain his lifestyle and keep his family living to the standard to which they have become accustomed.^[1][3]

In a flashforward, Andrew "Coop" Cooper wakes up in a mansion next to a dead body, and hastily cleans up his blood. Four months earlier, Coop, a wealthy hedge fund manager, is abruptly fired by his boss, Jack Bailey, over a fake HR complaint from Liv Cross, an employee he consensually slept with months prior. Coop soon learns that Jack fired him to absorb his accounts. Coop is divorced from his ex-wife Mel after catching her cheating on him with his best friend Nick, a former NBA championship winner. Since then, Coop has moved into a rental home and is having an on-and-off sexual relationship with his neighbor Sam Levitt, herself going through a chaotic divorce, while also looking after his wayward sister Ali. All of them continue to live in the Westmont community. Coop also has to deal with rising costs for his children, Tori and Hunter, with whom he has a strained relationship. During a neighborhood party, Coop excuses himself and wanders the house, finding a roll of cash that he steals and uses to buy a drumkit originally intended for Hunter. He later returns to the house after its owners leave for vacation, and steals a Patek Philippe watch along with more money.

Coop is forced to sell the watch at a much lower price than it is worth at a pawnshop in the Bronx due to not having the paperwork on hand. Coop rubs elbows at the country club before bringing Hunter with him to drop Ali off at their parents' house. However, Coop changes his mind and decides to let Ali live with him, and resumes his relationship with Sam. Coop arrives late to Tori's tennis tournament at the country club in order to rob her competitor Chelsea's parents, the Sperlings. He takes a Richard Mille watch from the Sperlings and also discovers authentic SAT papers. Coop tries to pawn the watch at the same shop, but the proprietor, Lu, refuses and runs his plates.

Coop arrives home to find Lu waiting for him; she tells him she ran a background check on him, and agrees to continue doing business with him so long as he does not mention her to anyone, threatening to report him to the authorities otherwise. Hunter plays a gig with his band at a house party, but suffers a bad trip from taking psychedelic mushrooms and locks himself in the bathroom; he calls Ali, who arrives at the party to comfort him. Coop begrudgingly accepts an invite to a party Nick is throwing at his house for the husbands while their wives are away at a self-defense course; Mel and Sam open up to each other at the course after sparring. Before going to Nick's party, Coop robs an expensive bottle of wine from his neighbors Dom and Kat Resnick, and witnesses Kat having sex with her daughter's boyfriend. Nick's party is cut short when one of his friends suffers an open fracture during a basketball game. Coop sneaks into Nick's house the following evening to steal Nick's NBA championship ring, but someone catches him and holds him at gunpoint.

Nick's housekeeper Elena catches Coop and holds him at gunpoint, but does not turn him in and instead proposes that they work together. After initially hesitating, Coop agrees to have backup. Elena introduces Coop to her cousin, Hector, who has equipment that can override security codes and reveals that the community's housekeepers often spread secrets about their clients. During a robbery, Coop encounters an unexpected alarm which he does not have the code for. Coop flees from the owner's dog and police, leaving the item and his earpiece while being bitten by the dog. Liv comes to Coop to warn him that his lawyer is in cahoots with Jack. She kisses him on the cheek, which Sam notices from her car. Mel has an extravagant birthday bash thrown by Nick. Mel has an existential crisis and leaves the party in dramatic fashion; Coop finds her and they share a sentimental moment together. During the night Sam reconnects with Coop and they leave the party together.

Coop and Sam agree to end their relationship; Sam takes her children to visit her parents in Boston. Hunter is threatened with expulsion from school after he and his classmates are caught using his prescription Adderall, but Mel agrees to pay $240,000 to the school to keep Hunter there. Barney Choi, Coop's financial advisor, faces issues financing his house renovation, and pressure from his overbearing in-laws leads him to nearly burn down his family's new barn while drunk. Coop and Elena plot to steal and sell a neighbor's Roy Lichtenstein painting while replacing it with a forgery. The two sell the painting to Christian Tómasson, an underground art dealer and contact of Lu's, and they celebrate at a nightclub afterwards. After consuming cocaine, Coop and Elena dance suggestively together, but Elena is cornered and groped by Christian. Coop intervenes, with Elena pepper spraying Christian and escaping. Elena lashes out at Coop because they will no longer get paid for the theft. Frustrated at losing the deal, Coop attempts to rob Sam's house but gets knocked out and wakes up to find her ex-husband Paul dead[a], and escapes. The next day, Coop and Barney each pretend like nothing happened.

Westmont PD Detective Lin rules Paul's death as an execution-style murder and investigates residents. Sam returns to hear that she is the sole beneficiary of Paul's $20 million life insurance settlement and hides her affair with Coop. Others bring up that Coop had a confrontation with Paul at Nick's party;[b] Coop provides an alibi, avoids mentioning his relationship with Sam and repeatedly ignores Elena's calls. The Cooper family visit Princeton University, where Coop and Mel spend the day drunkenly reminiscing after Tori and Hunter are led elsewhere. Coop admits to Mel that he was fired from his job and that he is financially struggling. They apologize to each other and have sex, after which Coop suggests the family start anew. Tori and Hunter are also inspired by their experiences, and the Coopers meet the Chois for dinner. However, Coop is jumped by Christian's thugs and Barney is left unconscious after being hit by a car.

Coop wakes up in the hospital and Detective Lin interrogates him. She believes that the attack was not random and urges Coop to co-operate, but he refuses. Elena's brother Chivo gets into a massive debt with drug dealer Félix and Elena agrees to pay it off. However, Hector no longer agrees to aid Elena's thefts. Lin and her partner Hernandez discover Coop on a nanny cam in one of Sam's son's rooms during a tryst. Barney angrily turns away Coop at the hospital due to Coop's evasiveness. Hernandez rummages through Coop's garbage and finds a blood match to Paul's murder scene. During Paul's funeral and while Ali is having a tryst with her married ex-fiancé Bruce, the police arrive with a warrant to search Coop's house. Ali and Mel warn Coop of the police's interest but he turns down help. Coop pre-emptively blackmails Kat Resnick into being his legal representation and Lin arrests him at the funeral in front of the whole of Westmont. During questioning, Lin produces a gun found in Coop's car which is the same as Paul's murder weapon. This leads Coop to spend the night in a jail cell, which he reflects on as his first honest action in a while.

Coop pleads not guilty to the murder, but Sam doubts his innocence and none of his family show at the pre-trial hearing. Coop's father bails him out of jail, after which Coop tries to see his children, but Mel refuses. Coop discovers that all of his remaining cash from the thefts was stolen by Elena, who uses it to pay off Chivo's debt to Félix. Lu confirms that she gave Coop's location to Christian and warns Coop not to return to her shop. Sam, Mel and Nick encounter each other at a coffee shop, which becomes a physical confrontation between Sam and Mel, in which Mel inadvertently reveals her hookup with Coop. The incident is shared online and in the fallout, Nick angrily leaves, Tori breaks up with her boyfriend, Bruce refuses to see Ali and Mel is put on leave from her job. Coop, Barney and Nick drown their sorrows with a wild night out, ending with Coop and Barney admitting dissatisfaction with their materialistic lives. Coop attempts to admit his crimes to Barney, who passes out before hearing it. Hunter visits Coop to support him and Coop apologizes for their fractured relationship. Kat pleads with Coop to take a plea bargain with a shorter sentence, but Coop still chooses to hide his crimes.

Facing prison time, Coop considers the plea bargain, signing over half of his house to Mel and gifting Hunter his Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. Ali stops taking her medication for bipolar disorder, and she vandalises Bruce's home after ranting about him at a gig. Coop refuses the plea bargain after Mel passionately begs him to fight the charges. Coop and Kat discover that Sam always used a burner phone to contact Coop, unbeknownst to the police. Searching for the phone, Coop and Elena break into Sam's house and discover a suicide note from Paul. In a flashback, Sam reveals her increasing unhappiness with Paul and the luxury Westmont lifestyle, reaching a climax when Paul left her for a younger woman. On the night of his death, Paul broke into Sam's house and shot himself while video calling Sam. In order to claim Paul's life insurance, Sam staged his death as a murder and framed Coop. In the present, Sam is arrested, exonerating Coop. Coop receives a heavy offer from Jack to return to his old job. Nick forgives Mel but implies he knows she still loves Coop. Coop threatens to expose the Sperlings for cheating on the SAT exam in order to get Tori into Princeton. Instead of meeting Jack for business travel, Coop steals artwork from Jack's mansion, turning his back on his previous life.

Production

It was announced in December 2023 that Jon Hamm was set to star in and executively produce the series, which was created by Jonathan Tropper.^[7] The series is produced by Apple Studios.^[8] In February 2024, Olivia Munn joined the cast.^[9] In March 2024, Amanda Peet, Mark Tallman, Hoon Lee and Lena Hall were added to the cast, with Craig Gillespie, Greg Yaitanes and Stephanie Laing set to direct episodes of the series.^[10][11] In April 2024, Aimee Carrero, Isabel Gravitt, Donovan Colan, and Eunice Bae were added to the main cast, with Sandrine Holt and Corbin Bernsen cast in recurring roles.^{[12][13][14][15]} Production began in April 2024, with Tropper announcing this on his Instagram.^[16]

In April 2025, James Marsden joined the cast as a series regular for the second season.^[4] In May 2025, Arienne Mandi, Erin Robinson, and Bre Blair were cast in unnamed recurring roles for the second season.^[5]

Reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the season holds an approval rating of 78% based on 60 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads: "An acidly witty riff on Breaking Bad, Your Friends & Neighbors' class commentary occasionally stumbles but has an endlessly watchable avatar in star Jon Hamm".^[17] On Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, it has received a score of 61 out of 100 based on 23 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.^[18]
