Hungarian
Etymology
Pronunciation
Noun
írásjegy (plural írásjegyek)
- (typography, semiotics, linguistics) grapheme
- glyph (a figure carved in relief or incised, especially representing a sound, word, or idea)
- Synonym: (proscribed) írásjel
- (chiefly of CJK scripts) logogram, character
- Synonyms: karakter, (chiefly of alphabetical writing systems) leütés
Usage notes
- Sometimes it is confused with írásjel, which actually means a punctuation or diacritical mark or another sign, symbol, or glyph used in writing.
- In Hungarian orthography, this term (in short, jegy) refers to the individual elements of digraphs and trigraphs (e.g. s and z in sz). Accordingly, the digraphs cs, dz, gy, ly, ny, sz, ty, and zs are referred to as kétjegyű betűk and the trigraph dzs, as a háromjegyű betű.
