Hungarian

Etymology

írás (writing, script) + jegy (mark, sign)

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈiːraːʃjɛɟ]
  • Hyphenation: írás‧jegy

Noun

írásjegy (plural írásjegyek)

  1. (typography, semiotics, linguistics) grapheme
    Synonym: graféma
    Coordinate term: betű
  2. glyph (a figure carved in relief or incised, especially representing a sound, word, or idea)
    Synonym: (proscribed) írásjel
  3. (chiefly of CJK scripts) logogram, character
Synonyms: karakter, (chiefly of alphabetical writing systems) leütés

Usage notes

  • Sometimes it is confused with írásjel, which actually means a punctuation or diacritical mark or another sign, symbol, or glyph used in writing.
  • In Hungarian orthography, this term (in short, jegy) refers to the individual elements of digraphs and trigraphs (e.g. s and z in sz). Accordingly, the digraphs cs, dz, gy, ly, ny, sz, ty, and zs are referred to as kétjegyű betűk and the trigraph dzs, as a háromjegyű betű.
