Etymology

The name of the city was borrowed from Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫤𐫏𐫘𐫛𐫇𐫗 (tyspwn /⁠Tīsfōn/, /Tēsifōn⁠/). The spelling reflects a folk etymology from the personal name, which is from κτᾰ́ομαι (ktắomai, “to acquire”) +‎ φωνή (phōnḗ, “voice”).
