Bulgarian

Etymology

According to Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary, of babbling origin similar to ма́ма (máma, mom), на́на (nána, aunty, female relative). No exact cognates outside of Balkan Slavic (Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbo-Croatian), thus, possibly a neologism. Formally, may result from a reduplication of Proto-Indo-European *meh₂- (to mature, to ripen) (whence perhaps Proto-Celtic *makʷos (son)).
