Etymology
From Proto-Semitic *ṣ́aʔn-. Cognate with Akkadian 𒇇𒇻𒄭𒀀 (ṣēnum) and Arabic ضَأْن (ḍaʔn). After the loss of the glottal stop [ʔ] the preceding vowel was compensatorily lenghtened and became [oː] as a result of the Canaanite shift.
