Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *nīr. Cognate with Badaga நீரு (nīru), Kannada ನೀರು (nīru), Malayalam നീര് (nīrŭ), Tamil நீர் (nīr), Toda நீர் (nīr), Tulu ನೀರ್ (nīrŭ), Telugu నీరు (nīru).
