From the older form ܟܲܘܟܒ݂ܵܐ (kawkḇā), where the current form is a back-formation from the plural ܟܲܘܟ݂ܒ݂ܹ̈ܐ (kawḵḇē). Inherited from Aramaic כַּוְכְּבָא (kawkəḇā), from Proto-Semitic *kabkab-; compare Classical Syriac ܟܘܟܒܐ (kawkəḇā), Turoyo ܟܘܟܘܐ (kukwo), Arabic كَوْكَب (kawkab), Hebrew כּוֹכָב (kokháv), and Akkadian 𒀯 (kakkabum).
