Inherited from Aramaic סְמָלָא (səmālā), from Proto-Semitic *śimaʔl-; compare Arabic شِمَال (šimāl), Hebrew שְׂמֹאל (s'mól), Akkadian 𒆏 (šumēlum), and Ugaritic 𐎌𐎎𐎀𐎍 (šmảl). The third definition is a semantic loan from English left.
