From Proto-Indo-Aryan *kṣatríyas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kšatríyas (ruler, warrior), from Proto-Indo-European *tek- (obtain, receive, get). Cognate with Avestan 𐬑𐬱𐬀𐬚𐬭𐬌𐬌𐬀 (xšaθriia), Old Persian 𐎧𐏁𐎠𐎹𐎰𐎡𐎹 (xšāyaθiya, emperor) (whence Persian شاه (šâh, king)). Related to क्षत्र (kṣatrá, rule, dominion, authority).
