From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dráwati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dráwati, from Proto-Indo-European *dréwh₂-eti (to run, act). Cognate with Ancient Greek δράω (dráō).

      prá teʼradadváruṇo yā́tave patháḥ síndho yádvā́jām̐ abhyádrávastvám.
      bhū́myā ádhi pravátā yāsi sā́nunā yádeṣāmágraṃ jágatāmirajyási.
