From Proto-Indo-Aryan *púHyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *púHyati, from Proto-Indo-European *púH-ye-ti, from *puH- (“to be foul, to stink; rotten”). Cognate with Ancient Greek πῦον (pûon), Latin putridus (“putrid”), Old English fūl (English foul).
