Etymology 1
Contracted from Old Hindi बांदर (bāṃdara), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀡𑀭 (vāṇara), from Sanskrit वानर (vānara). Doublet of वानर (vānar).
The -d- is excrescent between -n- and -r-, for which compare पंद्रह (pandrah).
