Learned borrowing from Sanskrit समृद्ध (sámṛddha). By surface analysis, सम्- (sam-) + ऋद्ध (ŕddh). Cognate with Gujarati સમૃદ્ધ (samŕddh), Marathi समृद्ध (samruddha), and Nepali समृद्ध (samr̥ddha).
