From ტფილისი (ṭpilisi). The spelling change, which occurred in the early 20th century, was motivated by the development of the word it is originally derived from (ტფილი (ṭpili, “warm”) → თბილი (tbili)). Compare Old Armenian Տփղիս (Tpʻłis).
