Etymology

From Proto-Iranian *waxš- (compare Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬑𐬴 (vaxṣ̌)), the largest tributary of the river. Related to Sanskrit वक्षु (vakṣu). Compare the latterday toponym of Vakhsh.
