First attested as Middle Korean 마ᄂᆞᆯ〮 (mànól) in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 24:50b, 1447, from Old Korean 蒜尸 (MANOl). Beyond attested forms, Jeju 마농 (manong) may suggest that the word was once morphologically complex.
