Etymology

Probably a pre-Sumerian substrate word. Originally spelt ๐’€ญ๐’‹€๐’ˆพ (dล Eล na), with the last sign just being a phonetic complement. An r-Auslaut has been proposed on the basis of the poetic Akkadian term ๐’€ญ๐’‹€๐’†  (nannฤrum, โ€œluminary, lightโ€), an epithet of ๐’€ญ๐’‚—๐’ช (Sรฎn) (the Akkadian moon god) or ๐’Œ‹๐’ฏ (Iลกtar), but no inner-Sumerian evidence exists to support this hypothesis.

Proper noun

๐’€ญ๐’‹€๐’†  โ€ข (dล Eล .KI, dnanna, dnannar /Nanna/)

  1. Nanna, the moon god, patron of Ur (corresponding to Akkadian Sin)
