Possibly from two different stems, later confused, mainly Proto-Athabaskan *tsəz (“to become extinguished”) and Proto-Athabaskan *tsa̓z (“to be apprehensive, fearful”).
Compare also -TSEED (“sink, soak”), which may be cognate with this root.
