Etymology
Aarle is first attested as arleh in 1249. Rixtel is first attested as ricstelle in 1179. Aarle derives from a compound of Old Dutch *are (“maple, Acer sp.”) and lo (“light forest”). Rixtel derives from a compound of an unclear first element and Middle Dutch stelle (“stable, safe haven”). The first element may be Middle Dutch rîc (“wealthy, powerful”) or ric (“narrow strip of land, path”). Compare for Aarle Aarle, Taarlo, Ten Arlo and Tynaarlo. Compare for Rixtel Boxtel and Scheepstal.
