From French moment, in part through German Moment (itself from the French). Ultimately from Latin momentum.

Loss of initial m- probably through rebracketing of such collocations as am Ament, an deem Ament; compare German im Moment (“at the moment”), in dem Moment (“at that moment”). The exact form Ament then through influence by synonymous Abléck (literally “glance of the eye”).
