Etymology
Ultimately from Arabic أَمِير (ʔamīr, “commander, prince”). A case of rebracketing, the -l probably comes from Arabic ال (al-), through it being a shortening of Arabic أمير المؤمنين (ʔamīr al-muʔminīn). Doublet of admiral.
