Etymology

Coined by French naturalist Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck, perhaps from Ancient Greek ἄζω (ázō, dry, verb) and ὀλλύω (ollúō, kill, verb), alluding to death from drought, or from an indigenous language of the Strait of Magellan, where the first specimen was collected.
