Two possible origins:

• Borrowed from Russian бегу́н (begún, “runner”), a nickname used in the local Jewish community. Doublet of Biegun and Bihun, from Polish and Ukrainian respectively.
• A variant of Begum, an Indian surname found in the Muslim community.
