Etymology

From Middle High German breide, from Old High German *breidī, West Central German form of breitī, from Proto-West Germanic *braidī. Cognate with German Breite. The -t- in the plural after the suffix -t (as in Héicht). Compare similarly haart (“hard”) > haarden, but Häert (“hardness”) > Häerten.
