From Middle High German buobe, from Old High German Buobo, a male given name from *buobo, from Proto-Germanic *bō-, a stem meaning "father, brother, close male relation". Cognate with German Bube (“(naughty) boy”), Dutch boef (“rascal, thief”), Saterland Frisian Baabe (“father, dad”), English babe (“baby”) and boy (“knave, boy”), Icelandic bófi (“bandit”).
