Sicilian
Alternative forms
- Calascibbetta, Scibbetta (Italianate spelling)
- Xibbetta (clipping)
Etymology
Borrowed from Arabic قَلْعَة (qalʕa) and a not-well-attested element, namely said to be شِبِثّ (šibiṯṯ, “anise”). Doublet of Calascibbetta.
Pronunciation
Proper noun
Calaxibbetta m
- Calascibetta (a town, in Sicily, Italy)
Usage notes
- The grapheme ⟨x⟩ is here employed for /ʃ/ as many instances of /ʃ/ in Old Sicilian do derive from a Latin x, as for example coscia, otherwise this symbol has however been used to adopt borrowings from foreign languages. The grapheme was also widely used in Ibero-Romance languages with the same scope.
