Used since 1906; from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, which was itself named after Andrew Carnegie.

  1. (education, US) A time-based unit of measurement used in American secondary schools to track student educational attainment. Each unit represents 120 hours of class or contact time with an instructor over the course of a year.
