Etymology

Derived from Scottish Gaelic siorrachd chlach Mhannainn (county with the stone of Manau). For the second element see cloch (stone). The last element is from Celtic, but of unknown meaning; see Manau.

Proper noun

Clackmannan

  1. A town in Clackmannanshire council area, Scotland, which was the county town of the historic county of Clackmannanshire until 1822 (OS grid ref NS9192).
  2. A local government district of the Central Region, Scotland, created in 1975 when the county of Clackmannanshire was abolished, and renamed Clackmannanshire again in 1996 when it became a council area.
