From Ancient Greek κόπρινος (kóprinos, full of dung, filthy), referring to the characteristic habitat.

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Coprinaceae mushrooms consisting of Coprinus comatus (the shaggy mane) and its close relatives.

Usage notes

  • Until 2001, Coprinus was a large genus consisting of all agaric species in which the lamellae autodigested to release their spores. Many of these were later reclassified.
