From Ancient Greek κόπρινος (kóprinos, “full of dung, filthy”), referring to the characteristic habitat.

- A taxonomic genus within the family Coprinaceae – mushrooms consisting of Coprinus comatus (the shaggy mane) and its close relatives.
Usage notes
- Until 2001, Coprinus was a large genus consisting of all agaric species in which the lamellae autodigested to release their spores. Many of these were later reclassified.
