Etymology
The settlement in Gelderland is first attested as heliste in 726. The settlement in Utrecht is first attested as elscher maelstat in 1448. Potentially derived from Proto-Germanic *alhistiją (“shrine, holy place”). An alternative etymology interprets the name as referring to an ancient hydronym.
