Etymology

The handshape and orientation are also used as a classifier for handling objects that can be picked up.

Production

• This two-handed ASL sign is produced as follows:
  1. Posture the nondominant hand in the “Flat O” handshape about half an arm’s length in front of and beside the chest, nondominant palm facing down. Posture the dominant hand in the “Flat O” handshape in front of the center of the chest, dominant palm facing down.
  2. Move both hands in parallel to the following posture.
  3. Posture the nondominant hand in the “Flat O” handshape in front of the center of the chest, nondominant palm facing down. Posture the dominant hand in the “Flat O” handshape about half an arm’s length in front of and beside the chest, dominant palm facing down.

Inflection

• This is a directional sign so it begins and ends in various locations to indicate the source and destination of the movement.
• The palm is oriented to face the surface on which the moved object rests. For example, if the object is a picture hanging on a wall, the palm is oriented vertically, parallel with the wall.
