Dutch
Etymology
First attested as in gannite in 790-793. Etymology uncertain. Proposed derivations from Proto-Germanic *ganda- (“wide, widened”), *gan-ita (“confluence of two rivers”) or from a term cognate to Old Norse gandr (“straight current”) are not backed up by the oldest attestations of the toponym. Compare Gent.
