Etymology
From Middle High German höuvet, from Old High German *houvid (attested as houvot, hovit, hovidis), northern variant of houbit.
The -v- was elided, probably when the vowel or diphthong was still rounded, thus Middle High German *höuet, whence the modern Luxemburgish form is regularly derived. Cognate with German Haupt, Dutch hoofd, English head.
