Proper noun

Hengelo

  1. A city and municipality in Overijssel, Netherlands.
  2. A town in Gelderland, Netherlands.

Dutch

Etymology

  • (Overijssel) First attested as hof to henghele in 1381-1383. From Middle Dutch Hengelôo. Likely a compound of Middle Dutch *heinge (enclosure) + lôo (light forest), although it is difficult to say whether this is the actual etymology of the toponym due to a paucity of old attestations.
  • (Gelderland) First attested as heingelon in 965. From Middle Dutch Hengelôo, from Old Dutch heingilō. Compound of Old Dutch *heingi (enclosure) + * (forest, clearing).

Compare Hengelder, Hengevelde and Hengforden.
