By surface analysis, hyper- (“above, over”, from Ancient Greek ὑπέρ (hupér)) + Ancient Greek ὀλῐ́ος (olĭ́os, “few, little”). Coined by German zoologist Wilhelm Ludwig von Rapp in 1842.
