Etymology

From Turkish İskenderun and Ottoman Turkish إسكندرون (İskenderun), from Arabic الْإِسْكَنْدَرُون (al-ʔIskandarūn), ultimately from Ancient Greek Ἀλεξάνδρεια (Alexándreia, Alexandria), from Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros, Alexander) + -εια (-eia, -ia: forming place names) in reference to Alexander the Great of Macedonia. Doublet of Alexandria, Alexandretta, Kandahar, and Scandaroon.
