Etymology

Initialism of 內地生 / 内地生 (nèidìshēng). Also a pun on Nintendo DS, a gaming console, often abbreviated to NDS. The gaming console is foldable (摺 / 折 (zip³)), whereas the students are not socializing with others (摺 / 折 (zip³)). Also reminiscent of English NCS (“non-Chinese speaking (student)”).
