From Russian ОМО́Н (OMÓN), which is short for Отря́д Моби́льный Осо́бого Назначе́ния (Otrjád Mobílʹnyj Osóbovo Naznačénija, “mobile special-purpose detachment”) or Отря́д Ми́лиции Осо́бого Назначе́ния (Otrjád Mílicii Osóbovo Naznačénija, “detachment of special-purpose police”) when Russian police was called the militsia.
