Borrowed from Ancient Greek πλᾰνώδης (plănṓdēs, “wandering, rambling”, adjective). Further from πλᾰνάω (plănáō, “to lead wandering, to mislead”).
Coined by American botanist Edward Lee Greene in 1912.
