First attested as ranwic in 1299. Compound of an unclear first element that may be linked to rand (“edge, seam”) and wijk (“settlement, village”). The first element has no etymological relationship with Middle High German ran (“thin, slender”) or Middle Dutch rane (“a kind of haddock”).
