Etymology 1

From Middle High German schīt, from Old High German scīt, from Proto-Germanic *skīdą. Cognate with German Scheit, English shide. The regular form is Schäit; that with -ee- was influenced by related scheeden (“to divide”). Related also with etymology 2 below.
