Etymology

First attested as die wijc in 1281-1284. Compound of Middle Dutch stomp (blunt, obtuse) and wyc (farmstead, village, settlement) or wyc (inlet, side channel). The element stomp may refer to a watercourse bending at an obtuse angle or an obtusely shaped piece of land.
