Etymology

Shortening of Ba Tàu. See tàu. The word tàu (“boat”) was first used to refer to Ming Chinese refugees who fled to Vietnam by boat when the Qing Dynasty took over China. The remnants of Ming Chinese refugees are nowadays known as the Minh Hương people.

  Người Nhựt từ xưa họ kêu người Tàu là "Đường", bởi họ thông với Trung Quốc bắt đầu từ đời Đường vậy. Thế nhưng gần đây, từ hồi có giao thiệp với các nước trong thế giới thì họ kêu Tàu bằng "Chi-na".
  Since time immemorial, the Japanese have referred to the Chinamen as "Tang" as they had diplomatic contacts with China since the Tang Dynasty. Recently, however, that they have established relations with the other countries of the world, they have decided to call the Chinamen[' country] "China".

  And then there are some Chinese and Vietnamese who said that there were these Sanmiao in ancient China. Usage notes

This term and người Tàu in particular may be considered derogatory in contemporary usage, with more polite terms including người Hoa or người Trung. However, historically, it was not considered derogatory. tàu, lowercased, is used in a variety of common nouns that are not considered derogatory either.
