Dutch

Etymology

First attested as vrees in 1139. Etymology uncertain. Probably not related to Fries (inhabitant of Friesland) or a derived personal name like Old Dutch *Frieso. Theories include a derivation from *wreg- ("instep"), with some -s suffix, or a word related to Old English wrāse (knit, contorted ground), suffixed with (a later equivalent of) Proto-West Germanic *-ja (place-name forming suffix). Compare Vrees.
