Dutch
Etymology
First attested as vrees in 1139. Etymology uncertain. Probably not related to Fries (“inhabitant of Friesland”) or a derived personal name like Old Dutch *Frieso. Theories include a derivation from *wreg- ("instep"), with some -s suffix, or a word related to Old English wrāse (“knit, contorted ground”), suffixed with (a later equivalent of) Proto-West Germanic *-ja (“place-name forming suffix”). Compare Vrees.
