From Middle High German wëge, plural and dative singular of wëc(h), from Old High German weg, from Proto-Germanic *wegaz. Cognate with German Weg, Dutch weg, English way, Danish vej.
The Middle High German nominative/accusative singular would have yielded Luxembourgish *Wech as in ewech (“away”). The new plural Weeër was secondarily derived from Wee.
