Described by Swedish physician Alf Vilhelm Albertsson Westergren (1891–1968) in 1921.

  1. (hematology) A method, used to estimate the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), which measures the distance (in millimeters) which red blood cells in anticoagulated whole blood fall to the bottom of a standardized upright tube over a period of one hour.
