Etymology

First attested as Wezel in 1849. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from the hydronym Proto-Germanic *Wisila, a compound formed from Proto-Germanic *wisô- (pasture, meadow) and lo (light forest), a compound formed from Old Dutch winna (pasture, meadow) and lo (pool) or a derivation from Old Dutch *wisilo (good forest). The hamlet could also be named after Wesel. Compare Wenum-Wiesel, Wessel and Wissel.
