    • 1828, W. Lawrence, “Observations on the Nature and Treatment of Erysipelas”, in Medico-Chirurgical Transactions, 14 (2): 15:
      Mr. Copland Hutchison remarks*, that the cellular texture connecting the adipous membrane, to the fascia or muscles, suppurates and sloughs more readily than the adipous substance itself.

Usage notes

An earlier alternative to adipose, this spelling fell out of use by the middle of the 19th century.
