Inherited from Vulgar Latin *bene venītus, presumably a calque of a Frankish term, derived from Proto-Germanic *wiljakwemô (a welcome guest or arrival), from which many modern Germanic forms descend, such as English welcome. By surface analysis, bem (well) + vindo (come).
